WE’RE BACK! Our September issue is here!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2015

Dear Readers,

Expanded Horizons is back! This year has been very difficult for me with the passing of my beloved grandfather, Morris Stone (ז״ל), who, along with my grandmother, have resided with me for the last two years, ever since the fire in May 2013 that burned their house. The spring and summer issue of Expanded Horizons took a backseat to family matters, and, alas, never happened.

But, with the start of the new year (can you believe Rosh Hashanah is less than two weeks away already?!), Expanded Horizons gets back up, dusts itself off, and carries on with life, as we all must eventually do after we lose a loved one.

So I bring you four stories — of magic in a Japanese internment camp, of a lesbian love between ghosts, of a transgender time traveler, and of an ancient river spirit who has lost her way. Come inside and enjoy!

If you like the issue and appreciate our efforts, please consider making a donation to Expanded Horizons through the PayPal button on the right. Our next issue will be released in October, 2015. (That’s right — next month!)

Our January Issue Is Here!

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

Dear Readers,

Happy New Year!

Our new issue features three stories for your enjoyment: one from the Philippines, where a young woman discovers that folklore is chillingly real; one from a land plagued by mists, where an actor searches for their next role in life; and one from a future San Francisco, where a young couple tries to readjust to life on Earth after a harrowing journey in space.

I hope you enjoy the issue! Please donate if you like what we’re doing — every little bit helps!

Our November Issue Has Arrived!

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

Dear Readers,

Our November issue has arrived! This issue features fiction set in four very different places: The rocky Irish coast, a suburb in the Philippines, the Desert (even as it mysteriously appears inside your own home), and on a far off world in the remains of an ancient alien city. We have Filipino spirit healers, magic realism, a lesbian selkie romance, and a contemplation of what human (and alien) colonization of space might mean for our collective linguistic future. Come inside and enjoy!

If you like the issue and appreciate our efforts, please consider making a donation to Expanded Horizons through the PayPal button on the right.

Interview!

Friday, September 12th, 2014

Dear Readers,

My interview with Jim Harrington is up live on his blog, as part of his series of “six questions” for editors of speculative fiction magazines.

People often wonder what I look for as editor of Expanded Horizons. Now here is your chance to hear the answer! Jim Harrington describes his project thus:

“In response to a post on my personal blog, a reader suggested I publish a series of interviews in which editors ‘list, in excruciating details, all that each editor desires in his/her stories.’ Wow. What a great idea. Not only does this provide authors with specific information about what editors are looking for in the submissions they receive, it offers editors a venue for advertising their publications and getting the word out about what, in their opinion, constitutes ‘good writing.'”

Thank you, Jim, for allowing me to participate in your project!
